Rare Birds Panel in Poland – report for 2023 on non-breeding species

Abstract: The sixth report of the Rare Bird Panel presents the occurrence of 40 rare species and 3 subspecies in Poland in 2023. In comparison with long-term data, 2023 was a very good or even record-breaking year for the Brent Goose Branta bernicla bernicla (113 records/583 individuals), Red-breasted Goose B. ruficollis (55/79), Canada Goose B. canadensis (66/6 964), Pink-footed Goose Anser brachyrhynchus (420/802), Egyptian Goose Alopochen aegyptiaca (recorded at 170 plots 10 × 10 km), Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus (41/108), Purple Sandpiper Calidris maritima (29/43), Black Guillemot Cepphus grylle (20/90), Arctic Tern Sterna paradisaea (38/91), Short–toed Eagle Circaetus gallicus (47/53), Pallid Harrier Circus macrourus (106/140), Red-footed Falcon Falco vespertinus (575/1 305), Rose-ringed Parakeet Psittacula krameri (11/25), and Red-throated Pipit Anthus cervinus (258/588). In 2023 very low numbers of the Eurasian Dotterel Eudromias morinellus (35/135), Broad-billed Sandpiper C. falcinellus (43/95), Glaucous Gull Larus hyperboreus (1/1), Sandwich Tern Thalasseus sandvicensis (outside coastal area; 1/2), Little Egret Egretta garzetta (33/46), Long-legged Buzzard Buteo rufinus (18/18), Homeyer’s Grey Shrike Lanius excubitor homeyeri (7/7), Blyth’s Reed Warbler Acrocephalus dumetorum (31/33), Yellow-browed Warbler Phylloscopus inornatus (12/12), Ring Ouzel Turdus torquatus outside mountains (7/8), Citrine Wagtail Motacilla citreola outside breeding sites (34/46), and Lapland Bunting Calcarius lapponicus (7/8) were recorded. From 2023, the Arctic Redpoll Acanthis flammea hornemanni has also been added to the reported taxa (20/23).
