Abstract: The report presents the results of the Rare Birds Panel for breeding species in Poland in 2023. The status of breeding populations of 33 rare taxa (30 species and 3 subspecies) including their abundance, distribution and trends was summarized. A record high abundance was observed for: Egyptian Goose Alopochen aegyptiaca (42 pairs), Red-crested Pochard Netta rufina (74 p.), Mandarin Duck Aix galericulata (189 p.), Pied Avocet Recurvirostra avosetta (25 p.), Great Egret Ardea alba (1 150 p.), Great Grey Owl Strix nebulosa (12 p.) and Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus (92 p.). An increase in numbers was also recorded for the Black-crowned Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax (1 258 p.), Eurasian Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus (44 p.) and Golden Eagle Aquila chrysaetos (30 p.). The declining trend was detected for Common Ringed Plover Charadrius hiaticula (293 p.), Great Snipe Gallinago media (447 males), Western Osprey Pandion haliaaetus (40 p.) and European Roller Coracias garrulus (5 p.). Populations of Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca (81 p.), Common Shelduck Tadorna tadorna (100 p.), Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata (157 p.), Greater Spotted Eagle Clanga clanga (19 p.; including 3 “pure” pairs, 8 mixed with C. pomarina and 8 Greater Spotted Eagles paired to unknown mates) remained stable. Fluctuations or unknown trends in abundance were observed for Mediterranean Gull Ichthyaetus melanocephalus (71 p.), Sandwich Tern Thalasseus sandvicensis (450 p.), White-winged Black Tern Chlidonias leucopterus (109 p.), Short-eared Owl Asio flammeus (12 p.), Citrine Wagtail Motacilla citreola (28 p. outside the Biebrza valley), and taxa which abundance did not exceed 10 pairs, i.e. Canada Goose Branta canadensis (2 p.), Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus (7 p.), Short-toed Snake Eagle Circaetus gallicus (4 p.), Homeyer’s Great Grey Shrike Lanius excubitor homeyeri (2 p.), Wallcreeper Tichodroma muraria (3 p.) and Grey-headed Yellow Wagtail M. flava thunbergi (4 p.).
